Since we redesigned the Scoil Mhuire Navan’s website, the school staff, parents and children visit the site much more often than ever before. They also look forward to reading any new pieces of news and enjoy viewing new photos in the school gallery. When there is an upcoming event, it is not possible to be missed as it’s prominently marked in the school calendar. Since the website is responsive, anyone can check what’s happening in the school on the go using their smartphones and, believe me, they do.

As you can see, schools and their communities can largely benefit from well-designed websites. Currently, we are in the process of redesigning the Scoil Naomh Eoin’s (Navan, Co. Meath) website and we can’t wait to launch it and make everyone happy!

A lot of schools do have school websites, which is great, but…

Many of them are visually or/and functionally defective. On many school websites, the first thing that literally hurts an eye is the misuse of contrasting, flashy colours throughout the site. This should be avoided as much as possible because it’s not easy on the eyes. They will quickly get tired making the user experience unpleasant and uncomfortable which might lower the likelihood of people coming back to visit the website again.

A significant number of school websites are not responsive which means they don’t visually respond to mobile devices. It’s commonly known that people are more likely to browse a website on their smartphones/tablets if it doesn’t have to be resized with fingers and swiped across to be read in full.

Not only does a responsive website provide a pleasant and super easy user experience, but it also makes Google happy, who rewards such website by ranking it higher in the search results.

What is Real-time SEO for Drupal?

Real-time SEO for Drupal module, formerly known as Yoast SEO for Drupal, is a great on-page SEO assistant for creating better content for your website. Content that will be user and search engine friendly.

This module has only one dependency, ^• Metatag, and together they play very well to help optimise your content. All in real time, as you type. This tool checks the length of page content and suggests relevant actions. It scans URLs, titles, subheadings and image alt attributes for the focus keywords you picked and much more. In other words, it’s a very good assistant while building on-page SEO.

After enabling the tool and setting permissions, it’s ready for optimising page content but, surprisingly, only by admin. What about other authenticated users? The Use Real-time SEO for Drupal permission is enabled but still it’s only the admin role who can use the tool. Is there a bug in this module or is there a catch?

^• Metatag has two dependencies – CTools and Token.

Authenticated users will be able to use the SEO assistant if you set all required permissions

Well, there are no bugs in this module (at least in our case) but there is a small catch within the module(s) permissions. As mentioned, the Use Real-time SEO for Drupal permission box is checked as shown below.

Apparently, this permission is not sufficient to activate the Real-time SEO tool in other than the administrator’s content editor. You will need to tick two more permission boxes. Under the Metatag group, check the Edit meta tags box as you can see in the image.

Finally, the last and probably unexpected step is to check the Create and edit URL aliases box under the Path group (see image below).

When you have those three fellows checked, each role specified in the permissions will now have access to the Real-time SEO for Drupal tool.

In order to achieve that, one would use, for example, Menu position or Context module. These are a bit complex modules useful for doing more complex and rather multiple tasks. It would be an overkill here. In our case, the Menu Trail By Path (MTBP) module is just a perfect fit to accomplish this simple job. Its file size is very small compared to the other ones’ and it has versions for both Drupal 7 and Drupal 8. There is a great thing about this module – it works almost out of the box. That means there is no need for configuration – just install, enable and voila, you’re done! By almost out of the box, I mean it works beautifully with properly configured Pathauto module. It is worthwhile to mention that the MTBP also enables breadcrumb handling.

So, let’s assume the Pathauto module is already in place. If not, install, enable and configure Pathauto module first, then do the same with the MTBP module (except for the configuration of course). That’s it!

So, if you still rack your brain ‘Why the heck the menu item doesn’t get highlighted, the paths are the same indeed’, there is no need for deep research. You will only need these two modules:

• Pathauto with its dependencies – Token and CTools.
• Menu Trail By Path without contributed dependencies or configuration.
